SIERRA VISTA -- Kathy Hering, 65, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 19, 2017, following an illness and surrounded by family and friends.

She was born to the late Robert and Rosalie Hering in St. Paul, Minnesota in 1951. Kathy lived in St. Paul until the age of 7 when the family moved to Stillwater, Minnesota. She attended grade school and high school in Stillwater, graduating in 1969. She lettered in gymnastics and specialized on the uneven parallel bars. She also participated in 4-H.

She continued her studies at the University of Arizona, eventually living in Sierra Vista where she retired from the Sierra Vista Unified School District in 2009.

Her passion was the kids at the schools where she worked. She always bought from them during fundraisers, attended their events and often was a chaperon for off-campus events. She was an active member  of the Arizona Odyssey of the Mind Association, for over 20 years, whose mission is to promote critical thinking and creative problem solving skills for students in a competitive setting.  She was a team coach, regional and state coordinator for the spontaneous problem solving portion of the competition and served on the state board.

She loved visiting family in Minnesota, photography, traveling, cats, gardening and surprising friends with small gifts. A favorite activity was knitting with the Sierra Vista Yarn Babes and Enlightenment Society. She was very active and enjoyed being with friends at the Cochise Racquet Club.

Kathy is survived by her husband Gary Smith, brothers Robert (Amy), John (Lori), Rick, Don, Jim(Cindy). She also leaves behind numerous loving relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Rosalie.

A celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m. at the Calvary Chapel in Sierra vista on March 25. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the American Cancer Society.
